Sustainable Human Development: Theory and Practice

Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to gain an in-depth understanding of the origins, evolution, and characteristics of Sustainable Human Development (SHD) both in terms of formulation and implementation. SHD is a holistic approach to development, encompassing economic, political, social, and environmental issues that are interdependent and complementary. Based on Amartya Sen’s Development as Freedom (1999), SHD aims at a better quality of life for all, “without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (UN World Commission on Environment and Development “Our Common Future”, Brundtland Report, 1987). Following the lead of the United Nations (UN), a great majority of development and global health actors have worked within an SHD framework since the 1990s.
