Public Health and Nutrition in Complex Emergencies

Catalog description

This course prepares students to operate at the front lines of complex humanitarian emergencies, where public health and nutrition decisions must be made rapidly, ethically, and with imperfect information. Students will develop pracIHSDtical, field-relevant skills to assess, design, and critique emergency interventions aimed at reducing excess morbidity and mortality in crisis-affected populations. Through real-world case studies, hands-on laboratories, and applied problem sets, students will learn how to conduct food security and nutrition assessments; analyze anthropometric, dietary, and surveillance data; calculate humanitarian rations; apply Integrated Phase Classification and other food security frameworks; and design evidence-informed interventions across nutrition, food security, water for sanitation and hygiene (WASH), maternal and child health, mental health and psychosocial support, reproductive health, and health systems recovery.
