Native South: Indigenous Identities, Sovereignties, and Resilience

This seminar explores Native history of the North American Southeast from the pre-Columbian era to the present. The course introduces a geographically expansive approach to the Native South including experiences from the Carolinas to Florida to “Indian Territory” in present-day Oklahoma, but it also centers local community histories from south Louisiana. Themes for readings and discussions include the stakes of community coalescence; experiences of dispossession, forced removal, and attempted erasure; processes of state and federal recognition; and the ways race and gender informed local and regional histories.
