EENS 6830
Geomechanics for Energy Systems
Tulane University of Louisiana · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will outline the material properties, and physical conditions in Earth’s crust, and their response to natural (e.g., tectonic) and anthropogenic processes like hydrocarbon and groundwater extraction, waste injection and CO2 sequestration, and potential hazards. We review the typical settings for subsurface resources and consider current technologies in place to monitor change in space and time, and to anticipate rock or reservoir failure, earthquakes, and groundwater contamination or gas escape. Assessment is through worksheets, three in-class exams, a case study, a technical review, as well as in-class participation.
