Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition

Catalog description
Lectures and discussions cover the minerals supply chain from mine exploration to refined product, and including mineral occurrence and mineral associations, the concentration steps to products used in energy fields, the economics of critical minerals, their use and future needs in wind, solar, electronics, and EV batteries, and recycling from mine and fossil waste and electronic waste. The environmental, societal and governance issues and evolving geopolitics will be reviewed through in-class discussions and blogs. Through project work, students will consider one critical mineral and explore new initiatives for urban mining, remining, regional hub and spoke plans for mineral processing.
