Satellites, Drones and Earth: How we observe our planet

This course introduces students to the basics of remote sensing; the sensors (satellites, drones) we use to study the earth from space; and the kinds of information that can be inferred from those sensors. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how earth observations reveal changes in land, water, and the atmosphere. Through discussions, interactive labs, group work, and some field activities, you’ll get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing earth observations to identify features on the land, monitor changes in land use, and track disasters. Using online tools such as the NASA World View, Google Earth and basic tools in the GIS software, students will also evaluate case studies demonstrating how satellite observations support decision-making in disaster management.
