Introduction to Disaster Theory and Practice

Catalog description

In this course we will gain an understanding of what disaster is, how a disaster is generated, the associated impacts of disasters and how to mitigate disaster impacts through policy and legislation. Students will compare and contrast the different types of disasters by applying the progression of vulnerability to different disaster scenarios. Participants will develop an understanding of how root causes, dynamic pressures and unsafe conditions come to shape the associated impacts of disaster on the individual, the household/family and the community. Developing innovative and sustainable solutions for an ever increasing universal problem with be a focus.
