Women's Media Cultures
Tulane University of Louisiana · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
"Women's media genres"—or commercial media that explicitly targets women as audiences—have long been major economic drivers of global media industries, yet these same genres are commonly panned by critics. Women's labor is likewise essential to media industries, yet it is often rendered invisible and/or women are subjected to gendered forms of harassment and exploitation. Taking a global and intersectional approach, this course explores how media ethnography can shed light on the role of women in media production, distribution, and reception. Students also learn how to design and carry out their own ethnographic project from proposal & research design through fieldwork, data analysis, and writing up.
