Propaganda and Media Governance

Catalog description

This course is about propaganda and its many mutations, including public relations, information warfare, and "sociological propaganda." It pursues a historical and theoretical account of how the control of public opinion and public emotion has become a defining aspect of institutional power in the 20th and 21st centuries. We will read key theorists of political communication and examine cases from a wide range of contexts and media forms, including documentary filmmaking, socialist nation-building, the Cold War, anti-colonial struggles, and misinformation/disinformation across digital networks.
