Catalog description

This seminar examines the cellular and microbial basis of infectious diseases through weekly case studies drawn from the "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report", published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Students will analyze recent and historical outbreaks involving bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal pathogens, with attention to the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, host response, and diagnostic approaches. Topics may include anthrax, botulism, E. coli, HPV, influenza, malaria, mpox, and antibiotic resistance. Emphasis will be placed on critical reading of scientific reports, oral communication of findings, and discussion of real-world disease scenarios from a cellular and microbial perspective.
