Expressions of Nature: A Site-Specific Investigation through Art

This is a project based class inspired by Sweden, combining print and the written word to tell dynamic stories about the flora and fauna of the region. Through guided excursions students will explore the region, drawing, photographing, and collecting inspiration from nature. Integrating principles of design and aesthetics, students will create unique visual expressions of these different field trips in a series of watercolor and print-based projects. The course will focus on the botany and species of the local ecosystem we encounter daily, as well as a species we might not see that is threatened in Sweden. Through site specific immersion students will develop skills with watercolor, cyanotype and printmaking. During the course you will create a journal project, a direct impressions project and a linoleum project, learning how to use these techniques in exciting and creative ways. This one month course is designed as an interdisciplinary approach to the arts and sciences. A background in either of these majors is not required. Counts as an Aesthetics and Creative Arts distribution requirement.
