Catalog description

This introductory-level course explores both traditional and experimental darkroom techniques. Students will begin by using 35mm single-lens reflex cameras (provided) and progress through a series of creative assignments that engage both the craft of photography and its conceptual frameworks. Students will learn to develop their own film, make silver gelatin prints, and experiment with hybrid and alternative processes. Immersive darkroom time, paired with demonstrations of advanced printing and alternative techniques, will build technical skills and support independent investigation. Exposure to a selection of historical and contemporary photographers will inform class discussions and the creative process. Through hands-on experimentation, students will explore the construction and manipulation of photographic media in order to strengthen their own artistic voice and practice.
