Catalog description

This course will look at how Renaissance and Baroque ideas and styles were received in Spain’s and Portugal’s American colonies from 1520-1810. It pays particular attention to the role of Indigenous and Afro-descendant artists and intellectuals in the processes of adoption and adaptation of imported forms and ideas. It aims to push beyond the conventional view of Latin-America-as-European-copy. Public facing projects will allow students to disseminate the art historical knowledge that they create.
