Intro to Spatial Painting

In this course, students will analyze works of art and architecture by producing analytical drawings and paintings that distill formal and spatial principles, working to unravel the interdependent relationship between representation, illusion, and speculation. Foundational color theory will be introduced as a means to translate spatial concepts through the idiom of abstract painting. In addition to presenting techniques of handling paint, this course will combine architectural analysis with painting exploration to study how color can define and amplify spatial readings. Students will produce one small painting per week to investigate concepts discussed in class, while simultaneously developing a technical facility with acrylic paint. As course content builds in complexity, painting techniques and color deployment will also become more advanced. This course will strive to augment the education of the designer with experimentations in color by exploring the tactile freedom (and restraint) of abstract painting.
