Neuroscience for Speech Language Pathology

Catalog description

This course examines the neuroscientific mechanisms underlying speech, language, cognition, and swallowing with emphasis on clinical application for Speech-Language Pathology. The course integrates neuroscience theory with analysis of neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan, including aphasia, motor speech disorders, traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and developmental neurological conditions. Students will critically evaluate research findings and apply neuroanatomical and neurophysiological knowledge to evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and intervention planning. This course fulfills ASHA requirements for biological and neurological foundations of communication and prepares students for graduate-level study and clinical practica in neurogenic communication disorders and dysphagia.
