Human Structure and Occupation

Catalog description

This four-credit course is a regional approach to the study of the structure and functions of the human body within the broader context of occupational therapy theory and practice, emphasizing the musculoskeletal system, with additional content on the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. This course includes foundational kinesiology, physics, and biomechanics concepts as they apply to purposeful movement and occupational performance. This course consists of lecture and lab components, with prosecuted and virtual cadaver studies, osteological and anatomical models, and hands-on training using surface anatomy on living individuals. Students will work collaboratively to acquire and apply clinical reasoning skills necessary to identify musculoskeletal limitations that may affect occupational performance. By the end of this course, students will have a solid understanding of the dynamic transaction between human movement, environmental context, and daily occupation. Prerequisite: None; Co-requisites: First semester courses.
