CURRENT TOPICS IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

Catalog description

The purpose of the course is to enable students to develop the skills to critically appraise the current literature on recent or seminal scientific discoveries in various fields of biomedical sciences and their impact on advancing our knowledge and understanding of disease pathology and the development of new therapeutic targets. The objective will be achieved by participation in journal club sessions where the students will take turns reading, researching, analyzing and leading a class discussion evaluating and critiquing a paper from a pre-selected collection of articles from the scientific literature on a given topic. MHSV 613. RESEARCH (3 credit) This course will not be offered every year. This is mentor- directed research. Faculty mentors function as course directors. Students perform hypothesis driven research under the direction of faculty. These could be used for learning new laboratory or clinical procedures, developing comprehensive reviews, and completing written reports. Opportunities for developing presentation skills and participation in seminars are provided. MHSV 617. PHYSICS WITH LAB A (4 credit) This is the first part of a two-part survey of general physics with an integrated laboratory recommended for students majoring in a science other than physics, including students of premedical programs. Topics include kinematics and dynamics of particles; momentum, work, and energy; gravitation; circular, angular, and harmonic motion; mechanical and thermal properties of solids, liquids, and gases; heat and thermodynamics. MHSV 618. PHYSICS WITH LAB B (4 credit) This course will not be offered every year. This is the second part of a two-part survey of general physics with integrated laboratory recommended for students majoring in a science other than physics, including students of premedical programs.
