Catalog description

This 4-credit hour course covers a series of advanced topics including reproductive endocrinology, special populations, and complex autoimmune diseases. It is designed for second year pharmacy students who have a strong foundation in integrated science systems and therapeutics. Students will expand on their understanding of endocrinology by studying gonadal hormone regulation and applying this knowledge to therapies related to contraception, infertility, menstrual disorders, hormone replacement, prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, androgen-related alopecia. Students will also take a deeper look at age-related changes in physiological that affect the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of some drug therapies. This knowledge is essential for safe clinical decision-making for special patient populations such as pregnant, pediatric, and geriatric patients. Lastly, students will apply their understanding of immune-mediated pathology to the management of autoimmune diseases such rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Comprehension will be assessed through a combination of case studies, projects, and exams.
