Given the prevalence of loss and grief in society, this course examines the issues, practices, and application of social work interventions with individuals and families facing grief and loss. Loss and grief are very much a part of life. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the issues, practice, and application of social work intervention with individuals facing grief and loss. The course will address the complex issues associated with traumatic loss (school shootings and suicide,) complex grief, and survivors' guilt as well as the challenges associated with the loss and death of a child, parent, or spouse and the impact of these losses at various stages of the life span. The importance of cultural, religious, spiritual, and ethical implications will be examined with individuals facing end-of-life and the impact on grief and the mourning process. The course will further explore multiple intervention models in the treatment of grief and loss.
