Catalog description

This course will provide an overview of the genesis and ongoing development of cognitive- behavioral treatments for a large number of DSM-IV mental health disorders. Further specific applications in treatment will be taught for each diagnostic category. Scientifically validated CBT treatments, ethical issues including informed consent and the basic concepts and application of CBT will be taught. The diagnosis and treatment of seven AXIS I mental disorders for which CBT efficacy has been clearly demonstrated will be discussed. These disorders include depression, panic disorder with agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia and hypochondriasis. These disorders will be discussed in the context of childhood and adolescence as well as adulthood. In addition, treatment of several disorders specific to childhood, including separation anxiety and selective mutism, will be taught.
