This course looks at the historical and philosophical underpinnings of modern educational theory and practice including the study of: ancient Greek literature; early Jewish, Christian, and Muslim writings; philosophical developments in the Renaissance, Reformation, and revolutionary periods; forces which have shaped educational policies in the United States; and current debates on meeting the wide range of educational and social-emotional needs of students from diverse communities.
