This second course of a three-semester course sequence continues to provide students with the knowledge needed to be clinically sensitive psychologists able to work with a range of individuals from diverse backgrounds in clinical and medical settings. Cultural differences and how they relate to the diagnosis of psychopathology and a variety of medical conditions are explored, including how cultures differ on important issues such as violence, suicide, expression of emotions, childrearing, etc. The APA guidelines for multicultural competency are also presented. Other ways individuals are diverse and therefore can be treated unfairly in our society such as gender, religious practices, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or medical conditions are also explored, as well as health disparities in the broad medical system. In addition, this section of the course will address aspects of living with disability, including physical disability and cognitive disabilities. Finally, special emphasis is made to integrate these issues within a thorough discussion and monitoring of their relevance to students' current externship experiences.
