Employment Law broadly surveys the law governing private employers and employees. The course begins by defining the employment relationship. Coverage includes traditionally common law topics such as “at will” employment, express and implied contractual duties, fiduciary obligations of employees (loyalty and non-competition), workplace privacy, and tort doctrines with specific applicability to the employment relationship. The course also includes a discussion of subjects regulated by statute, such as wages, hours, benefits, safety and health, family and medical leave, and a brief discussion of anti-discrimination laws (a more in-depth discussion of discrimination is covered in the Employment Discrimination course) . Coverage may include a discussion of the remedies available to employers or employees in litigation, procedural considerations, and managing the risks and costs of liability in employment disputes.
