This introductory course explores how civil legal disputes are resolved, with an emphasis on the procedural rules and processes associated with various stages of litigation in federal district courts and alternative methods of dispute resolution. The primary topics covered include jurisdiction, venue, pleadings, service of process, the Erie doctrine, injunctive and other forms of relief, joinder, discovery, pre-trial motions, jury trial rights, verdicts, judgments, post-trial motions, appeals, and preclusion. Coverage also includes the lawyer’s responsibility in litigation, including Rule 11 and other ethical considerations.
