Catalog description

Copyright Law explores the legal complexities and relevant policy considerations of copyrights in light of 21st century technological and other contemporary realities. This course surveys the relevant domestic and international laws, treaties and policies of copyright law, with a secondary emphasis on related areas of law such as rights of publicity, unfair competition, contractual protection of ideas, and new technologies in varying degrees. Topics to be covered include the subject matter of copyright; ownership and transfer of copyrights; the rights afforded to copyright owners in the U.S. and via international treaties and conventions; duration of protection; infringement; and remedies. Students will explore hypothetical cases and disputes that will help develop client counseling, transactional and litigation skills. Students will also write a paper that may be used to satisfy the AWR. The course is open to all students regardless of whether they have previously satisfied the AWR.
