Teaching the Holocaust through Memorials and Museums

Memorial sites and museums, visited by millions of people each year, are key places for remembering Jewish life and Nazi crimes during Holocaust. Their concepts, however, aim at different goals. The course will explore different memorials worldwide and see how their presentation can be contextualized in theories of memory, memorialization, and identity. It will analyze how a successful communication of Holocaust can be achieved. We will examine the influence and educational impact of museums and memorial sites in various geographical locations. It will explore questions of representation of victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and upstanders. Candidates will be offered the opportunity to take this course on-site at Touro Berlin.
