An examination of the social, economic and religious context which gave rise to Hasidism. The course will include: an analysis of the tales related to the Baal Shem Tov and disciples of the Besht; a study of the formation of a Hasidic movement; Mitnagid opposition to Hasidism; Hasidic customs and fundamental ideas of Hasidism, including the Zaddik and Devekut.
