Catalog description

This course introduces the student to the basic skills usually performed by the medical assistant in the medical office. This course is a patient-centered assessment emphasizing examination, intervention, and treatment as directed by a physician. The course is a basic introduction to the principles of pharmacology. Topics include classes of drugs by body systems and antivirals, antibiotics, vaccines, immunizations, and chemotherapy agents. Basic drug concepts and no- nomenclature are required in the allied health professions, such as preparations and parenteral route of administration, dose calculations, and side effects; approved abbreviations will be stressed. This course explains microbiological concepts for asepsis and combines BLS (Basic Life Support) with basic first aid skills. General first aid principles, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies are covered. Completing course requirements by the American Heart Association includes meeting the needs for BLS Certification.
