World Music

Catalog description

This course is designed to give students the knowledge and understanding of various musical styles and traditions of Western and non-Western cultures, including the music of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Australia. Students will learn to recognize the unique musical features of these cultures and their special roles in the context of world music. Musical portraits of each locale will be created through comparison with literature, theater and painting. Numerous video illustrations will be incorporated into the course.
