Geriatric Balance

Catalog description
This course provides working definitions of balance and mobility, explores the sensory and motor components of upright posture, and addresses the role of balance assessment and treatment in the medical management process. Students learn basic clinical tools needed to screen for instability and to provide appropriate treatment intervention. Students also learn specific assessments to identify different impairments and functional limitations pertinent to the elderly population. The course will broadly outline the development of postural control and will identify the effects of aging on each system. This course will also identify pharmacological effects on balance, and how to assess and treat these effects.
