PSY 4443. Psychology of Health Disparities. This course examines social determinants of health at global and national levels, focusing on how social, economic, environmental, policy, and psychosocial conditions are associated with population-level patterns of health, illness, and health care access. The course analyzes health disparities in relation to social position and group membership, including race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability status, and immigration status. Students engage established theoretical and empirical frameworks in health disparities research, including social determinants of health, to examine how racism, discrimination, marginalization, and institutional and policy contexts shape health risks, resources, and health care experiences over time. Prerequisite: PSY 1013 . Three seminar hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
