PSY 3743. Global Blackness and Psychology. Cross-cultural exploration of Black life and identity through psychological perspectives. Examination of African diasporic experiences; the continuing impact of historical systems such as slavery, colonialism, and Jim Crow; and the ways Black psychology and mainstream psychology contribute to understanding global issues affecting the African diaspora. Topics include racism, bias, gender, gender identity, trans experiences, inter- and intraracial dynamics, intergroup relations, and positive dimensions of Black life such as community, resilience, and cultural expression. Exploration of frameworks such as Black feminist thought, queer theory, Afro-diasporic theory, and intersectionality, alongside intercultural and international perspectives. Analysis of how Black communities are constructed in relation to other racial and ethnic groups. Satisfies Global Perspectives graduation requirement. Prerequisite: PSY 1013 . Three seminar hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
