The origins, contours, and empirical relevance of sociological theory are addressed. Distinctions are drawn between classical and contemporary theories of society, as well as different theoretical paradigms. Special attention is given to the social and historical contexts of theory construction, the theorists who developed specific perspectives, and the core concepts associated with each paradigm.
