This course explores the various mechanisms through which cities influence climate across local, regional and global scales. The class introduces the individual aspects of the urban climate system as well as the observational and modeling strategies used to study it. Many of the sustainability challenges facing urban environments will be discussed, including the urban heat island effect, urban flooding, air quality issues, and climate justice.
