Prerequisite: GLA 1013 or POL 1013 . The course introduces students to the organization's history, structure, operations, and role in the international system. It examines the historical context of the UN's founding and its functions, processes of institutional reform and change, and the successes and failures of the organization, in order to understand the UN's role in contemporary world politics and the challenges and dilemmas it faces. Topics may further include the integration of new issues such as Human Security, as well as new actors, such as nongovernmental organizations and multinational enterprises.
