During the Interventional Psychiatry Elective, third and fourth-year medical students who have completed their Psychiatry Clerkship rotation will learn about the subspecialty of psychiatry that utilizes procedures to address psychiatric conditions. Examples include electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and intranasal esketamine (Spravato). Students will participate in screening patients for these outpatient interventions, monitoring them during interventional procedures, and performing pre-/post-interventional assessments. They will learn about the neurobiological theories and research supporting the use of each intervention, as well as the limitations of each procedure. Students are evaluated using the Clinical Elective Rotation Performance Assessment of Student tool. A pass is awarded if the student's overall performance meets or exceeds expectations. Prerequisites: Psychiatry Clerkship.
