In the Forensic Psychiatry Experience elective, fourth-year medical students who have completed their Psychiatry Clerkship will be introduced to key aspects of forensic psychiatry. Primary training sites include the UT Health SA Behavioral Health & Wellness Center, the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, and a private practice setting with periodic civil evaluations. By the end of the rotation, students will be able to describe the structure and purpose of common forensic evaluations (competency to stand trial and guardianship) and outline court processes related to how a defendant progresses through the legal system if found incompetent to stand trial. Students will attend forensic didactics where they will have case rounds and mock trial experiences to gain a perspective of other forensic exams. Departmental Permission Required, for fourth-year students only. Prerequisites: PSYC 3005 .
