The Junior Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery experience will provide D3-year dental students with the necessary skills to properly evaluate patients and provide oral surgery care in a safe, effective, and caring manner. Clinical experiences in the Predoctoral Oral Surgery Clinic are designed to be progressive in nature, with appropriate integration and correlation of the biomedical sciences. D3-year dental students are assigned for daily rotation (AM/PM Sessions) for a period of one-week continuous rotation in the Oral Surgery Clinic. Each student will be paired with another D4-year student and are expected to work together while taking care of the patients in the Predoctoral Oral Surgery Clinic. The students are expected to have a total of three weeks of such rotations at different intervals of time throughout the course of their third year. All the D3-year dental students are required to pass an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery competency examination by the end of the third-year rotation in the Predoctoral Oral Surgery Clinic. During the clinical oral surgery rotation, the D3-year students will also have an opportunity to administer nitrous oxide sedation and are required to pass a Nitrous Oxide competency examination.
