DIAG 7055 provides students with learning experiences to develop critical thinking skills necessary for recognizing and developing differential diagnoses for oral mucosal disorders, salivary gland disorders, temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain disorders. Management and appropriate documentation of these disorders, including referrals and multidisciplinary patient care are emphasized. Principles of dental management of medically complex patients are also reinforced. This course incorporates conceptual, clinical and technical knowledge and skills. Diagnostic protocols, including radiographic, laboratory, and biopsy procedures as they relate to oral diagnosis are discussed. This course is designed to integrate the student doctor's knowledge of basic and clinical sciences through case-based active learning with an evidence-based approach. Didactic knowledge is complemented with a 1-week clinical rotation in the Oral Medicine clinic. Successful completion of DS2 courses is required.
