Catalog description

This course challenges pre-health students to apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the study of disease across body systems, with emphasis on conditions prevalent in South Texas. Students will examine the pathophysiology of major acute and chronic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular, kidney, liver, and pulmonary diseases, and cancer and link underlying mechanisms to clinical presentations. Particular attention is given to how these conditions are recognized, managed, and prevented in the primary care setting. By the end of the course, students will be able to explain pathophysiologic processes across systems and evaluate how providers address common health challenges among South Texas patients.
