This course focuses on key epigenetic and genetic mechanisms that preserve genomic integrity and prevent the development of cancer. This course is 10 weeks long with two 1-hour classes each week and is open to all graduate students and exemplary upper division undergraduates (with permission from the course directors), and it is required for trainees supported by the Epigenetics, DNA Repair and Genomics (EDGe) Training Program. The EDGe Training Program is jointly supported by an institutional Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (T32 CA279363) from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and our NCI-designated Mays Cancer Center (MCC), the Long School of Medicine (LSOM), and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). The Molecular Origins of Cancer course is organized and scheduled so that it can be taken the same year as the core Cancer Biology courses or independently as an elective. Prerequisites include Enrollment in a current UT San Antonio (Health Sciences Campus) or UT San Antonio graduate program or, for undergraduates, successful completion of one or more courses in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or an equivalent that must be reviewed and approved by a course director.
