Catalog description

Fundamentals of Speech Science This course will address the scientific principles that underlie normal speech production. Basic principles regarding how the speech signal is generated, properties and interpretation of the acoustic waveform, acoustic phonetics, and theories of speech perception will be covered. Equipment and methods used to measure and analyze respiratory, laryngeal, articulatory and acoustic components of speech will be discussed. Students' projects will include the application of speech instrumentation. Some discussion of the application of concepts to various speech disorders will also be included.
