Rewriting America since 1960s

In this course we will look at the ways in which American fiction writers of the 1960s began to question and reimagine the art of fiction in the context of a newly ubiquitous consumer culture. Reading novels and theoretical essays, we will examine some of the issues facing these writers and their artistic responses to these new challenges. Reading assignments will include fiction by John Barth, Thomas Pynchon, Ishmael Reed, Don DeLillo, Kathy Acker, and Philip K. Dick; and theoretical work by Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, donna Haraway, Frederic Jameson and others. Writing assignments will include critical responses to the reading, creative exercises, and a final critical project. Prerequisites: CRW 5364 , CRW 5321 , and CRW 5365 with a grade of "B" or better. Departmental approval also required. Restricted to major of Creative Writing; Restricted to level of GR.
