Writing Center Internship & Practicum

Writing Center Theory and Practice Internship is a graduate-level course and internship that brings theories from composition, rhetoric, and literacy studies to bear on the practices of peer-to-peer writing tutoring and writing center administration. Students are introduced to core literacy concepts (e.g. value of literacy, accommodation, hegemonic discourse, discursive clash) and writing center frameworks (e.g. directive vs. collaborative, session structure) through reading and discussion. Next, students gain qualitative research experience by observing a session and analyzing it as a case study through those frameworks. After the case study, the reading load lightens, and students take on several hours a week as interns in the Writing Center. Class meetings are then dedicated to discussing internship experiences and individual research (qualitative or scholarship) that will be presented at the Annual Research Symposium and/or the South Central Writing Center Association Conference.
