Catalog description

This introductory PhD-level seminar introduces various theoretical approaches to the study of language, including structuralism, generative grammar, functionalism, pragmatics, interactional sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, sociocultural theory, and complex systems theory. It covers both the historical development of the field and current areas of growth such as the semiotic and the quantitative turns and language acquisition. Prerequisites: PhD students in Applied Linguistics or instructor approval.
