Catalog description
This course examines the rise of American narrative from the colonial period up to the Civil War. The course may approach literature from thematic or chronological perspectives. Topics could include exploration of how narrative fostered the formation of American identities and literatures, how fundamental ideologies and intellectual concepts still influence how Americans think of themselves, and how anxieties about race, class, gender, and religion informed the creation of literature in early America. Prerequisites: ENG 1302 .
