From Data to Action: Mixed Methods Methodology for Problems of Practice

This doctoral-level course, shared across Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, and Higher Education, introduces students to the theory and practice of mixed methods methodology as a scholarly approach to inquiry. Grounded in the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) framework, the course mirrors the Dissertation in Practice (DiP) inquiry cycle by guiding students to Plan (frame Problems of Practice, establish purpose statements, and design integrated research questions), Act (apply core and complex mixed methods designs and data collection strategies), Evaluate (analyze and interpret integrated datasets using joint displays and mixed methods validity criteria), Reflect (situate inquiry within philosophical foundations, positionality, and equity considerations), and Revise (develop, critique, and refine PoP-aligned research proposals). Students will apply mixed methods methodology to case study applications and improvement science cycles, demonstrating how integrated designs generate actionable knowledge that connects methodological rigor with meaningful change in educational leadership, curriculum, and higher education contexts.
