Inquiry in Action: Qualitative Research for the Dissertation-in-Practice

Catalog description

This doctoral-level course introduces students to the traditions, theories, and practices of qualitative inquiry with a focus on applying case study and action research methodologies to address Problems of Practice (PoPs). Aligned with CPED principles, the course prepares scholarly practitioners in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, and Higher Education/Learning Technologies to design and implement rigorous qualitative studies that inform meaningful change in their respective fields. In Educational Leadership, students will apply qualitative inquiry to investigate issues of leadership practice, organizational culture, and equity in schools and districts. In Curriculum & Instruction, emphasis is placed on exploring the lived experiences of teachers and learners, examining curriculum implementation, and analyzing the impact of instructional practices. In Higher Education and Learning Technologies, students will use qualitative approaches to study student engagement, institutional practices, and the role of technology in teaching and learning. Across all strands, students will engage in weekly discussions, applied activities, and reflexive journaling, culminating in the creation of a qualitative research plan (case study or action research) that supports their CPED-aligned Dissertation-in-Practice.
