Beginning Music Composition

Catalog description

The main goal of the course will be to present and discuss the many ways through which composition can be thought and discuss strategies to expand musical vocabulary and idea articulation with special detail in each of the parameters of music, from a small sound particle to big portions of time. It will be a space for discussing different aesthetics, methodologies, techniques and approaches to sound and its organization into music. The course will be guided by four aspects: Listening (apprehending): students will partake in critical listening, identifying formal procedures or any kind of relevant connections and processes within the work. Analyzing (comprehending): we will analyze certain works through a fixed media such as a score or a recording. Improvising (combining): sessions of improvisation will be held every two weeks. Composing (structuring): the end of the semester will mostly be dedicated for composing a piece. Prerequisite(s): Music Theory IV.<br/>
