Catalog description

Introduces the fundamental principles of linear systems, feedback, and feedforward control with a particular emphasis on applications in modern power and energy systems. Students will learn to model, analyze, and control dynamical processes that govern energy generation, conversion, storage, transmission, and distribution. Key topics include mathematical modeling of physical systems, time- and frequency-domain methods for system analysis, stability criteria, and PID controllers. Applications are drawn from across the energy sector, such as regulating fluid flow and thermal processes in fossil and nuclear plants, controlling inverter-based resources in renewable energy systems, and managing load flows and voltages in power transmission and distribution networks. The course further explores the architecture of industrial control systems, including sensors, actuators, distributed energy resource management, SCADA systems, and system-level networking. By the end of the course, students will gain a practical understanding of how control theory underpins the reliable and efficient operation of large-scale, interconnected energy infrastructures. Prerequisites: Grade C or better in MATH 3319 (or equivalent), EE 2440 , REE 2301 .
